Millennials leading change in marriage and divorce

Residents in Pennsylvania have been watching as the millennial generation takes the lead in changing many things in society today. One of the latest areas in which this generation seems to be reshaping society is in marriage and divorce

As reported by The Atlantic, this group has been found to have a lower rate of divorce than did those who came before them. Some research was conducted and led by a professor at the University of Maryland who found that from 2008 to 2016, the divorce rate dropped by approximately eight percent. This level accounts for other changes in demographics during this time. Raw data originally suggested the decline was as high as 18 percent.

In looking further at the reasons for this drop, it was also discovered that fewer millennials are getting married. This, in turn, would logically lead to a reduction in the number of divorces. Further, there appears to be a link between education, economics and marriage for millennials.

Millennials who do not have college degrees are less likely to get married than those who have completed college. The latter group then also waits longer to get married. This puts the newly married millennials in a better financial position that someone getting married at a younger age or without a college education. Some people may be concerned that these shifts may signal a status is becoming associated with getting married that was once not present. If a divorce does later happen, one may logically wonder if the pool of assets to be divided will be higher.
