What do courts look at when deciding a child custody case?

On Behalf of | Dec 4, 2014 | Firm News

Child custody disagreements during divorce court proceedings are perhaps the most difficult that any parent will ever have to endure. In the state of Pennsylvania, courts strive to decide child custody arrangements in a way that is in the best interest of the child involved. While this fact is certainly re-assuring, the courts also rely on the information provided to them as evidence and arguments by both sides in court. As such, it is important that parents embroiled in a child custody suit are aware of what information courts review in order to rule on a child custody case.

One of the most important factor in a child custody dispute include the ability of both parents to sustain the continuity of the child’s education, community and family life. Another important factor is the ability of the parents to both encourage and allow continued and frequent contact with the other parent. The parental duties that were performed by both parents during the marriage and before the divorce are also important. The proximity of each parent’s homes to one another and the parent’s availability to actually care for the child are also matters that the court will review.
